Peony Peacock

thumb-1
The peony peacock was a common motif of Japanese paintings. Famous Japanese painting artists like Jakuchu Ito or Oukyo Maruyama painted them. I tried to paint a peony peacock in my style. IlustStudio Intuos 5 CintiQ 13HD

Onna Sannomiya - from The Tale of Genji

thumb-1
Onna Sannomiya was the second Hikaru Genji's legal wife. It seemed that ladies did not show not only their faces but also their figures in public those days. When they talked with people, they did it behind a curtain or a screen, or through written messages. It seemed to be thought not decent to show a figure in except for relatives for ladies. Therefore, a young aristocrat peeped into Onna Sannomiya's figure by chance, he fell to love only by it. IlustStudio Intuos 5

Ukifune - from The Tale of Genji

thumb-1
I started to read "The Tale of Genji"(源氏物語), written by the female novelist Murasaki Shikibu(紫式部) about 1,000 years ago. This story was about an unbelievable good looking aristocrat called Hikaru Genji(光源氏). First of all, I was strongly culture-shocked, because the customs of that era in Japan were totally different from the present ones. It is often said that Tale of Genji have been popular, because Hikaru Genji has been getting support by female readers. But I think the most populer character in Tale of Genji has been Ukifune who is the last female character in the story. I don't want to talk the reason, because I don't want to spoil the ending of the story. openCanvas Intous 5

Okuni Izumo

thumb-1
It is said that Okuni Izumo 出雲阿国 was the originator of kabuki. kabuki-mono 傾き者 was in fashion in the Okuni's era. kabuki-mono wore weird costumes, and also wore weird makeup. The old Japanese verb, kabuku 傾くmeans literally "to tilt", but I think that it may be proper to translate to "to bend" or "to distort", so kabuki-mono means "benders" or "distorters". The troupes of Okuni did street-performances and danced at Kyoto, and all over Japan. They introduced the weird fashion and makeups of kabuki-mono in their performances, and they became so popular. Their dance was called kabuki-odori 歌舞伎踊り(kabuki-dances), and it was the origin of kabuki.
These days, cosplayers wear weird costumes, wigs, and makeup, and sometimes they dance while wearing them.It may be a similar situation to the Okuni's era. SAI Intuos 5
